Erie’s resident-lead Sustainability Advisory Board included an Anti-Idling public education campaign as a strategy in the Sustainability Master Plan. Communicating about the negative air quality and health impacts near schools, where idling is prevalent in many communities, and near delivery areas like the downtown will encourage people to turn off their engines when their vehicles are not moving, thus reducing air pollution and related greenhouse gas emissions.
Did you know the Town also participates in an extensive air quality monitoring station network and hour-by-hour results are accessible at your convenience? Visit Erie’s Air Quality webpage today for more information.
In the United States, nearly 4 million gallons of fuel (enough to fill five Olympic-size swimming pools) is wasted every day as a result of unnecessary vehicle idling - and this is just for passenger vehicles. Unnecessary idling is bad for our health, bad for the environment, and bad for our wallets. Individually, we each waste two to four tanks of gasoline per year, just by idling.
None of us intend to be wasteful, but we have all found ourselves parked with the car running at some point recently. Did you know it is a completely outdated notion that restarting your car wastes more gas than letting it run? Think about new vehicles that turn off when stopped at a red light or stop sign - it saves energy to shut down the engine completely!
