Thank you for your interest in this important Task Force! This group will be helping guide proposed changes at the Front Range Landfill within the Town of Erie. The community members who made up the Task Force met with a facilitator, Town staff, and staff from Waste Connections from April through October 2024.

The Task Force had a main priority of creating recommendations related to the future of the landfill property with the idea that Waste Connections may eventually come forward asking for updates to the landfill footprint and operations.

The final recommendations will be posted here by Nov. 12.

A presentation to the Town Council is planned for Tuesday, Nov. 19. The meeting will be a fully virtual meeting due to construction at Town Hall. The public will be able to share 3-minute comments during this meeting. Monitor the Town Calendar for links and more information.

You can see more on the landfills on this page on the Town's website. The active landfill is monitored by the Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment (CDPHE) for water impacts. The Town of Erie also has air monitoring systems across our community. If you have more specific questions, you can email our Environmental Services Director.

The Landfill Taskforce is charged with making recommendations to Waste Connections regarding future operations and no firm timelines will be set until Waste Connections brings land use applications to modify operations before the Eire Town Council. It is not currently known when the entrance may be moved, which is necessary prior to diverting the large semitruck waste hauling traffic away from the Weld County 4/5 intersection. Even after potential entrance relocation, some landfill traffic (smaller garbage trucks and personal truck/trailers) will likely continue to utilize these public roadways.

There is no construction planned for the Redtail Development as the Town Council voted to deny the Redtail Ranch Application during the June 25, 2024 and July 9, 2024 hearings. There are not currently any plans in place to widen Weld County Road 4.

When is the landfill suppose to close permanently?

    Becky asked 4 months ago

There is not currently an anticipated date to end operations at the landfill. The landfill operates under a permitted capacity, which means the company can continue operations so long as they have the capacity and follow all health, safety, and other regulations. The lifetime of landfill activities is not known as rates of disposal can vary widely due to future waste diversion efforts (e.g. recycling/composting/etc.), contracts, rate of compaction, and many other unknown factors, particularly as the landfill approaches permitted capacity. The landfill operates currently estimate another 20+ years of operation.

  • Share Twice in the last meeting I heard that the main reason to move the entrance was to reduce or eliminate heavy landfill traffic from sensitive areas, primarily Sheridan Pkwy to 4 to5 and Erie Pkwy to 5 and in. It was also stated that it would be unwise to have only one route in and out. With cr7 being out due to the RENA agreement and Rd 6 east of 7 being out, that only leaves 7 south of Erie Pkwy. Is what Is desired? Rd 7 south of Erie Pkwy is also posted no landfill traffic. The entrance is only being moved 1/4 to 3/4 of a mile. If the roundabout that was previously shown at 5 and 6 goes in that would eliminate any heavy trucks from coming in from either direction on 5. Where would this traffic go? The word could has been used for restricting traffic east of 7 on 6, are Waste Connections and Erie committed to this restriction? Other options are not being explored. They may involve more but may ultimately be the best and safest solution. For example a direct route from the west frontage rd at Erie Pkwy diagonally to 6 and 7. Yes, you have hit on exactly the issues that the Task Force is discussing and teasing out. We don’t have an answer for you here because they will be talking about this and examining these issues further in upcoming meetings. We encourage you to continue being involved and listening in to the Task Force discussions.

Unfortunately, purchasing the required land and building a dedicated route from the west frontage road at Erie Pkwy diagonally to 6 and 7 is not a cost feasible option for either Waste Connections, Weld County, or the Town of Erie.

  • Share During the last meeting, Mark from Waste Connections presented the proposed land swap and moving their truck facility to the south west corner of cr6 and cr7. He stated that would allow these vehicles to proceed directly to the facility without leaving the property after dumping their last load of the day. The only way this is possible is to bridge the FRICO ditch. Is this the plan? Bridging the ditch was mentioned as a negative to moving the entrance east of the ditch. Thanks for your question. Waste Connections has said, "To route the trucks internally from the landfill to the proposed hauling company as shown conceptually in the taskforce meeting, a crossing agreement from FRICO would need to be obtained by the landfill."

Yes - the link it listed in multiple places here on the webpage (and is being shared today on social media and in the Town's Weekly Update newsletter) and is: https://bit.ly/June26LTF. Anyone can tune into the live meeting on June 26 at 6:30 p.m. to hear the discussion from the Task Force and submit questions.

Multiple routes are under consideration by the Task Force. The "open land" by those areas you mention is mostly privately owned, so if the Task Force recommends using those areas to create dedicated routes, the Town would need to investigate the cost/ability to purchase land.

The Task Force is scheduled to meeting through September. There are more meetings between now and them for the group to come to a consensus on a recommendation to the Council.

Hi Karen - the meeting on June 26 is indeed virtual, but it is not closed to the public. Anyone is more than welcome to tune in and watch/submit questions during the meeting. Use the link https://bit.ly/June26LTF to attend the meeting at 6:30 p.m. on June 26. We had to switch to virtual simply because of scheduling issues, no other reason. Future meetings are planned to be back in person.

We have added your other comments to the list of comments for the Task Force to consider.
